Facts About Ankle Sprains

Runners often experience pain in the ankle, the most common of which is a sprain. The main cause of a sprained ankle is called inversion. This occurs when the foot rolls inward and the ankle turns outward. The result is the stretching, or sometimes tearing, of one or more ligaments that hold the ankle together. Ankle sprains can be categorized by severity. Mild sprains are considered grade 1 injuries, consisting of slight tears in the collagen fibers in the ligaments that stabilize the joint. Symptoms are pain, tenderness, and possibly a slight limp. A grade 2 sprain means the ligament is torn, but not completely ruptured. Symptoms worsen to include swelling, instability, and reduced range of motion. A grade 3 sprain is a complete tear of the ligament. This results in an inability to bear weight and needs immediate attention. How Does an Ankle Sprain Occur?

Ankle sprains take place when the ligaments in your ankle are torn or stretched beyond their limits. There are multiple ways that the ankle can become injured, including twisting or rolling over onto your ankle, putting undue stress on it, or causing trauma to the ankle itself.

What to Do About Toenail Fungus

If you notice that your toenails have become thickened, rough, or stained it may be a sign of onychomycosis, also known as toenail fungus. This fungal infection is contagious and quite common among older adults. Touching the infected nail or any surface infected with the fungus can allow it to spread. The fungus thrives in moist, warm environments like gym locker rooms, swimming pools, and changing areas. If your feet or shoes are damp or sweaty, the fungus is more likely to multiply and feed on the nail tissue. Eventually, it may grow under the nail into the skin, turning the nail yellow and changing its appearance. Toenail fungus is not generally painful, but the nail may develop cracks. Protection against infection includes keeping the feet clean and dry, sprinkling antifungal powder inside shoes, and wearing shoes made of breathable materials. It is suggested that you wear foot coverings when you are in damp areas where the fungus is apt to spread. Many people develop pain in the heel, which can be the result of overuse. This may cause the plantar fascia, the band of tissue that runs under the foot from the toes to the heel, to become inflamed and painful. One way to prevent this type of damage is to wear the correct shoes. Footwear that has adequate cushioning in the heel can go a long way to reduce the onset of heel pain. Wearing flip flops or ballet flats, and walking barefoot, may add to the risk of developing heel pain. In addition, wearing shoes that are too small can cause the toes to grab, or claw, inside the shoe. This action places further stress on the plantar fascia. Instead, it is thought that a shoe with adequate space for the toes and a slightly elevated heel, such as a running shoe, can reduce the stress on the plantar fascia. Causes of Heel Pain

Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.

Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.

Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.

Flat Feet in Adults

Flat feet is a condition that usually affects children. The condition occurs when an individual lacks an arch in their feet, and their entire foot can rest completely against the ground. For example, newborn babies or even toddlers will frequently not exhibit any arch, simply because their arches have not yet developed and matured. Despite the prevalence of flat feet in young children, adults can also be afflicted with this condition. For instance, flat foot is common for individuals who are obese. This is because the added weight that obese people put on their feet when standing can push their natural arches down to the floor. What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.
